The Council of Ministers approved on Tuesday the appointment of Antonio Ansón Latorre as the new Director General of the State Agency for Tax Administration (AEAT), succeeding Soledad Fernández, who requested to be replaced after the Income Campaign.

Antonio Ansón Latorre (Zaragoza, 1962) will be the new Director General of the Tax Agency. The Council of Ministers approved his appointment on Tuesday, according to sources from the Treasury. He replaces Soledad Fernández, who requested her replacement weeks ago and has remained in the position until the conclusion of the Income Campaign, which ended in late June.

A profile with extensive experience in the Treasury and the IMF

Ansón has been a State Tax Inspector since 1999 and a Treasury Technician since 1988. He holds a degree in Law from the University of Zaragoza, and also has a master's degree in Public Management and has completed the Digital Leadership Programme for Public Administrations.

His career in the Tax Agency includes positions such as head of the Taxpayer Telephone Assistance Centre (1999-2006), head of Coordination of Treasury Administrations in Madrid (2006-2007), and Deputy Director General of Planning and Programming (2007-2010). He was also Deputy to the Regional Head of Collection at the Special Delegation of Madrid and Deputy Director of the Human Resources Department.

Between 2014 and 2022, he worked at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington, as a specialist in tax and customs administration, first as a technical advisor and then as a senior economist. Upon his return to Spain, he was head of Studies for Public Management at the Institute of Fiscal Studies (IEF) and a researcher in Tax Administration.

Since April 2025, he has been the Director of the Cabinet of the Secretary of State for Finance, Jesús Gascón. The Treasury highlights his "deep knowledge" of tax administration and the Spanish tax system, as well as his managerial experience and international background, which endorse him as a "particularly qualified" profile for this new stage.

Agreed transition after the Income Campaign

The Minister of Finance, Arcadi España, explained that when he took office, he held meetings with senior officials of the Ministry. In that meeting, Soledad Fernández expressed her intention to be replaced after several years at the helm of the agency. The minister asked her to wait until the end of the Income Campaign to avoid interfering with the process.

Once the campaign concluded at the end of June, the appointment of Ansón was proceeded with. Fernández's departure also coincides with the departure of the directors of Collection and Financial and Tax Inspection, who have applied for positions as finance advisors in embassies. This process has not yet been resolved, so both remain in their positions.

What the change means for taxpayers

The change in the leadership of the Tax Agency occurs at a time of administrative normalcy, following the closure of the personal income tax campaign. For taxpayers, the change does not imply immediate modifications in deadlines or tax procedures. The Agency continues with its usual functions of management, inspection, and collection.

Ansón takes on the role with the challenge of maintaining the efficiency of the agency and promoting the digitalisation of tax services, an area in which he has already received training. His time at the IMF has given him a global perspective on fiscal administration, which he could apply to the modernisation of internal processes.

The appointment will be formalised at the Council of Ministers meeting on Tuesday and will be published in the Official State Gazette in the coming days. From then on, Ansón will officially take possession of the position.
