The shopping centres in Málaga have cancelled the second night opening, scheduled for this Thursday. This decision follows the strike on July 30, which had an 85% participation rate.
The shopping centres Plaza Mayor and McArthurGlen have decided not to hold the second night opening, planned for this Thursday 27 August. This has been confirmed by Ayoze Curbelo, head of Commerce at CC OO Málaga.
The initiative, dubbed Late Night Shopping, aimed to extend closing hours from 22:00 to 24:00 on two dates: 30 July and 27 August. Following the union protest in July, the second date has been rescheduled.
Instead of the night opening, both venues have announced the Súper Jueves After Feria Edition, which will take place during regular hours, from 10:00 to 22:00. The confirmation has been communicated to the workers' representatives by the employers.
“This decision is a demonstration of the success and clear triumph of our mobilisation on July 30, which had a huge turnout. We attribute it to the success of the rally and strike we called. The two shopping centres have rescheduled Thursday's event. However, we remain vigilant; we do not know if this idea may resurface at another time,” Curbelo stated.
The strike on 30 July, called by CC OO and UGT, managed to close 99% of the shops in both centres, with an 85% participation rate among staff. Workers protested against the companies' unilateral decision to extend hours without prior negotiation.
Among the reasons cited were the detrimental impact on work-life balance and the logistical and transport difficulties in getting home from the area late at night. They also feared that these two days of opening could mark the beginning of a trend affecting the 30,000 people employed in the sector in Málaga.
For consumers, this Thursday's schedule remains the same, meaning there will be no shopping until midnight. The decision provides relief for employees at both centres, who see that union pressure has yielded results.
