A group of protesters confronted federal deputy Cuauhtémoc Blanco while he was heading to the Mexico-England match of the 2026 World Cup. They shouted 'murderer' at him for the homicide of activist Samir Flores Soberanes and painted his truck.

Federal deputy Cuauhtémoc Blanco Bravo, from Morena, was intercepted this Sunday by a group of protesters on Periférico Sur, near Zapote Street, as he was reportedly heading to the Estadio Ciudad de México to watch the match between the Mexico and England teams, part of the 2026 World Cup.

The events occurred during a protest called by the Anti-World Assembly and the people of Santa Úrsula Coapa, as reported by the Trinational Anti-World Network (RETA) through their social media. The protesters confronted the former footballer, labelling him a “murderer” for the homicide of activist Samir Flores Soberanes, which occurred on February 20, 2019, in Temoac, when Blanco was governor of Morelos.

Shouts of 'murderer' and paint on the truck

In a video shared by RETA, protesters can be seen surrounding the luxurious Cadillac Escalade in which the deputy was travelling. “Blanco murderer, Samir lives!” shouted one of the protesters, while the legislator returned an indifferent glance and got into the vehicle without saying a word.

Subsequently, the protesters painted the truck, which was stopped on Periférico Sur. At one point, Blanco got out to confront one of the individuals painting, but another occupant of the vehicle began hurling insults at the protesters. The former footballer restrained him while personnel from the Mexico City government intervened in the confrontation.

“Corrupt bastard!” shouted one of the protesters. Later, as the truck began to reverse away, attendees chanted in unison “Murderer, murderer, murderer!”, a slogan that was also painted on the vehicle.

Blanco crosses the median to escape the blockade

To exit the blockade, Cuauhtémoc Blanco crossed the median that divides the side lanes from the central ones, while some protesters threw stones at the vehicle. The incident occurred near the National School of Anthropology and History (ENAH).

The protest is part of the opposition from various groups to the 2026 World Cup, which they consider an event that benefits the elites and criminalises communities. The Anti-World Assembly has called for several mobilisations during the tournament, demanding justice for victims of human rights violations and denouncing state repression.

The homicide of Samir Flores Soberanes, which occurred in 2019, remains unresolved. The activist opposed the construction of a thermoelectric plant in his community and was shot dead. During Cuauhtémoc Blanco's government in Morelos, the state prosecutor's office failed to clarify the crime, leading to constant accusations against the former governor.

This is not the first public incident Blanco has faced regarding this case. In February 2025, during a commemorative event for the sixth anniversary of the murder, protesters also confronted him in Mexico City. His federal deputy position grants him immunity, limiting legal actions against him.

For readers interested in following this case, the Trinational Anti-World Network continues to document the protests and demands that the Attorney General's Office resume the investigation into Samir Flores' murder. On February 20, 2027, it will mark eight years since the crime with no convicted individuals.
