The Burgos-based company Hiperbaric has organised an international hackathon with 27 students from the University of Valladolid and Georgia College to improve spare parts management using artificial intelligence.
Hiperbaric, a Burgos company and world leader in high-pressure technology, has tested international university talent with a real challenge: to optimise the management of its warehouse spare parts using artificial intelligence. To this end, it has brought together 27 students from Spain and the United States in a hackathon that combines training, innovation, and cross-border cooperation.
The initiative, developed in collaboration with the University of Valladolid, included the participation of fourteen students and two professors from Georgia College (United States), who travelled to Valladolid this week. There, they worked alongside thirteen students from the University of Valladolid and two teachers from this institution.
The participants come from degrees such as Computer Engineering, Business Administration and Management, Labour Relations and Human Resources, Finance, and Marketing and Market Research. They were organised into five multidisciplinary and international teams to design innovative solutions to the challenge posed by the company.
The programme began with a visit to Hiperbaric's facilities, where the management team, led by its CEO, Andrés Hernando, presented the challenges that the students have worked on over several days. After a phase of collaborative work, the teams presented their proposals to a jury composed of Ramón Bustamante, Director of Technology and Digital Transformation, and Guillermo Alcuaz, AI and Digital Transformation Engineer at Hiperbaric.
Beyond the academic component, the stay has allowed the American students to learn about the cultural heritage of Valladolid and the province. Thanks to the collaboration of the Diputación de Valladolid, they took a trip to the Castle and Provincial Wine Museum of Peñafiel and the Castle of Fuensaldaña, reinforcing the cultural exchange that accompanies the project.
The activity is part of the Teaching Innovation Project (PID) titled Co-Creating Educational Apps and Serious Games for Schools: Interdisciplinary Role-Play Teams and Competitive Collaboration Using Generative AI for Innovative Teaching, which promotes active learning methodologies through interdisciplinary collaboration, project work, and the use of generative artificial intelligence as a support tool for the educational process.
For Andrés Hernando, CEO of Hiperbaric, this collaboration between the business and academic worlds has allowed the company to “open a real challenge of our activity to students from different disciplines and countries, who have worked with a fresh perspective on how to optimise our processes using artificial intelligence.” In his opinion, initiatives like this are “an opportunity to connect with young talent, learn from them, and continue fostering a culture of open innovation and collaboration with the university.”
The hackathon has not only generated potential solutions for Hiperbaric but has also served as a practical training experience for the students, who have been able to apply their knowledge in a real industrial environment. The company, based in Burgos, is a global benchmark in high-pressure technology, with a presence in over 50 countries.
This initiative adds to other actions by Hiperbaric to promote open innovation and attract young talent. The company maintains a close relationship with the University of Valladolid and other academic institutions and is committed to internationalisation as a way to enrich its R&D processes.
The results of the hackathon will be evaluated internally by Hiperbaric, which will assess the possible implementation of the proposed solutions in its warehouse management system. The company has not specified timelines but has expressed satisfaction with the quality of the work presented.
