Jeff Bezos, through his investment vehicle Bezos Expeditions, participated in a $450 million funding round for CuspAI, a British startup that employs artificial intelligence to discover new materials for chips, clean energy, and advanced manufacturing.

The founder of Amazon, Jeff Bezos, has put his money into a startup that promises to accelerate the discovery of new materials for semiconductors and clean energy. CuspAI, a British company, has closed a funding round of $450 million in which Bezos Expeditions, Bezos's personal investment vehicle, participated.

A valuation of $2.6 billion and luxury partners

The operation has valued CuspAI at $2.6 billion, according to reports. The round was led by venture capital funds Kleiner Perkins and NEA. Alongside Bezos Expeditions, Glade Brook Capital Partners, Lux Capital, AMD Ventures, and the UK Sovereign AI Investment Fund also participated.

The composition of the investor group reflects the interest of both private funds and public entities and chip manufacturers in material innovation. This is no surprise: semiconductors and clean technologies largely depend on materials that have yet to be discovered or are too expensive to produce.

A materials factory with Nvidia and Meta

CuspAI has not only focused on raising capital. The company has announced the launch of the so-called AI Materials Factory, an initiative that brings together data, laboratories, computing power, and scientific knowledge to accelerate the discovery of new compounds.

The network involves 45 organizations, including Nvidia, which will provide accelerated computing infrastructure, and the fundamental AI research team from Meta. The idea is to connect digital simulation with experimental validation to reduce the time and cost of finding new materials.

“The AI Materials Factory combines Nvidia's accelerated computing infrastructure with world-class expertise in chemistry and materials to help drive the next generation of material discovery,” stated Chad Edwards, CEO and co-founder of CuspAI.

The challenge is immense: there are countless possible combinations of elements to create a material with specific properties. Testing each one in a laboratory would take years. CuspAI employs artificial intelligence models to simulate the behaviour of these materials and narrow down the candidates before moving on to physical testing.

Josh Coyne, a partner at Kleiner Perkins, noted that “many of the major technological leaps depend on a material.” In his view, advancements such as cheaper carbon capture, new semiconductors, or cleaner water “are still waiting for materials that have yet to be discovered.” “CuspAI has built a search engine that changes that,” he added.

What it means for the tech sector and the reader

For the semiconductor sector, this investment represents a boost to the idea that artificial intelligence can accelerate material innovation. Companies like Nvidia and AMD, which participated in the round, are looking for materials that will enable the production of more powerful and efficient chips.

For the reader interested in the tech economy, Bezos's move confirms that material discovery is the next major battleground for AI. The timelines for seeing concrete results are uncertain, but the alliance with Nvidia and Meta suggests that the first prototypes could arrive in a couple of years.

CuspAI will expand its operations in the UK, Singapore, the Netherlands, Germany, Japan, and the United States. The startup is part of a new generation of companies applying artificial intelligence to physical world problems, beyond software.

The news not only impacts investors. Anyone using a smartphone, electric car, or solar panel will indirectly benefit from cheaper and more efficient materials. The countdown to the next major discovery has begun.
