Figma has acquired the team from the startup Bud (formerly Orchids), specialised in artificial intelligence and 'vibe-coding'. The operation aims to transform the design tool into a complete software development platform.

Figma, the world's most widely used collaborative design platform, has announced the acquisition of the team from startup Bud, previously known as Orchids. This company specialised in artificial intelligence and the development of 'vibe-coding', a technique that simplifies code creation through automated assistants. The operation, reported by TechCrunch, strengthens Figma's strategy to evolve from a static design tool to a comprehensive software product creation environment.

Bud was born within the Y Combinator accelerator and developed AI agents capable of generating mobile applications, websites, and services for platforms like Slack. Its founder, Kevin Lu, explained on the social network X that joining Figma was a natural step towards a new era where ideas come to life directly from design.

From visual design to functional code

In recent years, Figma has worked to reduce the gap between design and programming. The company launched Figma Make, a feature that allows users to create basic web applications, and established integrations with tools like Codex and Claude Code. With the addition of the Bud team, Figma is expected to offer more powerful automated agents and much more complex prototypes, bringing functional design closer to frontend developers.

According to the terms of the agreement, the Bud and Orchids platforms will cease to operate independently before July 18, 2026. Current users must migrate their projects to other platforms before that date. This means that the startup will develop as an internal component of Figma, not as a separate product.

Security and future plans

The Bud (Orchids) platform had security issues. The BBC reported that researchers had identified vulnerabilities in applications created with Orchids, exposing them to cyberattacks. Although Figma has not detailed the specific projects of the acquired team, analysts believe that the priority will be to develop secure and intelligent coding tools.

For Spanish designers and developers, the news has a direct impact. Figma is the most popular design tool in the local IT market. In the future, professionals could create prototypes with ready-to-use code through artificial intelligence, significantly reducing development times and costs. The acquisition demonstrates that the AI revolution continues to transform the design world, and that Figma aims to become an indispensable platform for both UI/UX designers and developers.

Users of Bud and Orchids should be aware of the platforms' closure on July 18. Figma recommends migrating projects to other alternatives before that date to avoid losing any work done.
