Residents of Reta demand action on high water tables and coastal erosion from Fuerza Patria councillors

High water tables, the Albufera, and damage from cyclogenesis: residents of Reta raised concerns with Fuerza Patria councillors during a visit.

Councillors from the Fuerza Patria bloc toured Reta and spoke with residents about the impact of high water tables on streets, the situation of the Albufera, and the damage from cyclogenesis on the coast.

On Saturday, a delegation of councillors from the Fuerza Patria bloc led a visit to the town of Reta, where they met with residents and municipal delegate Daniel Civetta. The meeting included a tour of the town and an open dialogue space to address the main issues affecting the permanent residents of the seaside village.

High water tables: the problem flooding the streets

One of the most recurring topics during the day was the impact of high water tables on the condition of several streets. In various areas of Reta, the rise in the water table causes flooding, pavement breakage, and difficulties for circulation, especially after rainfall. Residents pointed out that the situation worsens in winter and that the solutions applied so far have been insufficient.

The councillors took note of the complaints and committed to raising requests for reports to the municipal Executive to evaluate drainage and maintenance works. “We know that living in Reta year-round has particularities different from the season. There are urgent issues and others that require planning,” stated one of the councillors present.

The Albufera, a heritage at risk

Another central point of the conversation was the situation of the Albufera of Reta, a body of water key to local identity and tourism. Residents raised the need to advance maintenance tasks and actions that allow for the preservation of the wetland, considering its environmental value and its potential as a year-round tourist attraction.

From the Fuerza Patria bloc, they indicated that they will present projects to manage improvements in urban and coastal infrastructure in the upcoming sessions of the Deliberative Council. The Albufera, they explained, requires a planned intervention that combines ecological conservation with recreational use.

Coastal erosion after cyclogenesis

The delegation also toured the beach and stopped particularly in the area of the submedanal tunnel, where they could observe the effects of the last cyclogenesis. The meteorological phenomenon caused significant coastal erosion, with sand retreat and changes in the beach configuration. Residents fear that these events will occur more frequently due to climate change.

“This is a matter that concerns us because it affects not only tourism but also the safety and access of residents to the coast,” explained the councillors. In this regard, they agreed on the importance of coordinating with provincial and national authorities to evaluate impact studies and possible mitigation works, such as dune restoration or the construction of breakwaters.

Next steps: from the territory to the Deliberative Council

The visit to Reta is part of a series of tours that Fuerza Patria has been conducting throughout the district. The objective, as they explained, is to close the year with an updated diagnosis of each locality to prioritise demands and work together with the municipal Executive. “Being present in the territory remains the most effective tool to understand the particularities of each community,” they emphasised.

Delegate Daniel Civetta valued the meeting and highlighted the residents' willingness to raise both problems and ideas. Some of the issues discussed will be brought to the Deliberative Council in the upcoming sessions, through requests for reports and ordinance projects. Additionally, the councillors announced that they will return to Reta in the short term to follow up on the complaints.

For the residents of Reta, the visit represents a first step for their demands, often postponed outside the summer season, to be heard by the authorities. The combination of structural problems — water tables, the Albufera, erosion — requires solutions that transcend municipal management and coordinate with other levels of government.
