The Cabildo of La Palma has activated a grant line of 650,000 euros to encourage permanent hiring, with aid of up to 9,000 euros per contract in specific cases.

The Cabildo of La Palma has launched a new aid line of 650,000 euros to promote the permanent hiring of unemployed individuals, aiming to consolidate the island's economic recovery following the volcanic eruption of 2021.

Grants of up to 9,000 euros for permanent contracts

The call, aimed at businesses and self-employed individuals, will be open until 4 September. Its goal is to strengthen business competitiveness and contribute to the economic consolidation of the island. Grants can reach 5,000 euros for full-time permanent contracts.

This amount increases to a maximum of 9,000 euros in specific cases: hiring individuals with disabilities, university graduates or vocational training holders in positions that match their qualifications, registered in the registry of those affected by the volcanic eruption, or workers in municipalities with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants.

According to sources from the Cabildo, the initiative is part of the island's strategy to diversify the productive model. Authorities agree on the importance of transforming current growth into permanent jobs that retain population and offer opportunities, especially to young people and groups facing integration challenges.

How to apply for the aid

Applications can be submitted through the Electronic Headquarters of the Cabildo of La Palma and the La Palma Emprende platform, where all information and requirements are detailed. Interested parties must prove the formalisation of the permanent contract and the registration of the worker with Social Security.

For self-employed individuals, the aid also covers the hiring of employees under an employment contract, provided that the contract is permanent and full-time. The grant is compatible with other public aids, as long as they do not exceed the total salary cost.

Job stability remains a key challenge for La Palma in its post-volcanic eruption economic recovery process. Despite the gradual improvement in the labour market, temporary employment and the need for quality jobs dominate the agenda.

Impact on the local economy

The call aims to encourage the creation of stable jobs on an island still suffering from the aftermath of the volcano. According to data from the Cabildo, the unemployment rate in La Palma stands at 15.2%, above the Canary Islands average. The aids aim to reduce this figure and retain population in the smaller municipalities.

Local entrepreneurs view the measure positively, although some point out that bureaucratic procedures can be an obstacle. The La Palma Emprende platform offers free advice for submitting applications.

In summary, this line of aid represents a boost for permanent hiring on the island, focusing on the most vulnerable groups. The application deadline is 4 September, so interested companies must act quickly.
