The OPUS Terminal system and the digital twin platform from South Korea's CyberLogitec will manage the expansion of TTI Algeciras, which will add 15.9 hectares and half a million containers of capacity.
The TTI Algeciras container terminal has reached an agreement with the South Korean tech company CyberLogitec to implement its operating system and digital twin platform in the expansion project of the Isla Verde Exterior dock. The solution, called OPUS Terminal, will integrate ship, yard, gate, and equipment management into a single system, while the digital twin will provide real-time visualisation of all port activities.
According to CyberLogitec, this technology will allow TTI operators to simulate operational scenarios and make data-driven decisions in a virtual environment identical to the real one. The terminal, partly owned by the South Korean shipping company HMM and the French CMA CGM, aims to optimise the performance of its new semi-automated facilities.
A €135 Million Expansion
The expansion project of TTI Algeciras includes the addition of 15.9 hectares in phase B of the Isla Verde Exterior dock, which will complement the 30 hectares already occupied in phase A. The Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA) has granted two extensions to the concession, one ordinary for five years and another extraordinary for 22, allowing TTI to occupy the land until 2066.
To finance the works, the company executed a capital increase of €70 million, covering almost half of the estimated budget, set at around €135 million. The bulk of the investment will be allocated to the superstructure: two dock cranes, 12 automatic yard cranes, and six shuttle carriers, in addition to the upgrade of the operating system.
Capacity for 2.1 Million Containers
With this first phase, the terminal will increase its handling capacity by half a million containers (TEUs), reaching 2.1 million TEUs. The six new storage blocks will add to the existing 16, and the APBA anticipates that a second phase, which could add another half a million TEUs, will be underway by 2030, according to its new strategic plan.
The integration of CyberLogitec's digital twin will not only enhance operational efficiency but also reduce response times to unforeseen events, allowing solutions to be tested in the virtual world before applying them in the real one. For logistics operators using the port of Algeciras, this translates into greater predictability and lower waiting costs.
The agreement reinforces TTI Algeciras's commitment to digitalisation as a lever for competitiveness. The terminal, one of the most modern in the Mediterranean, seeks to consolidate its position as a transhipment hub in a context of increasing pressure for efficiency and sustainability. The expansion works are expected to begin in the coming months, once the permits are finalised.
