Pedro Sánchez has responded with irony to Alberto Núñez Feijóo's aspirations to reach La Moncloa and reminded him that the upcoming change of government will depend solely on the will of the citizens at the polls.
The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has once again focused on the ballot boxes as the only judge of Spain's political future. During an event held at the PSOE headquarters in Ferraz, Sánchez responded with irony to the repeated aspirations of the leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, to become head of the Executive and reminded him that any change of power will depend on citizen support in the upcoming elections.
Three years after the general elections of July 23, 2023, which ushered in one of the most complex legislatures in recent democracy, Sánchez described this period as “hazardous.” The president defended that, despite parliamentary difficulties and the need for constant agreements with various political forces, his party will approach the next elections with the intention of renewing voters' trust.
Sánchez's message came after Feijóo expressed on several occasions his goal of occupying La Moncloa. “The will of a candidate is not enough,” the president emphasized, insisting that it will be the citizens who determine the final outcome. The reference to the upcoming elections reflects how the Spanish political battle is beginning to project towards 2027, although there is still time to exhaust the current legislature.
From the Popular Party, Feijóo maintains his discourse as an alternative to the socialist Executive and advocates for the need for a change of political cycle. The PP leader believes there is an opportunity for his party to lead the next Government, while Sánchez insists that his project still has room to develop its commitments. The exchange of messages highlights a growing tension between the two main national parties, which face the coming years with an eye on consolidating support and expanding their electoral base.
The event in Ferraz was also marked by a tribute to Manu Escudero, a historic socialist leader who passed away in March of this year and was linked to the Avanza Foundation. Sánchez highlighted his role as one of the intellectual references of the PSOE and valued his commitment to social reforms and the transformation of the country. The president described Escudero as a reformist militant and a key figure within socialist thought, whose absence affects both his personal circle and the entire political organization.
Beyond the tribute, the event served for Sánchez to reinforce a message of continuity: the PSOE aims to face the next electoral cycle by defending the management carried out during this legislature and presenting itself as an option capable of maintaining the country's course. The political struggle between Sánchez and Feijóo is thus transferred to the electoral arena, where both leaders prepare for a new stage of confrontation, with the next general elections as a key date.
