The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, reiterated on Wednesday his call to all political forces to reach a grand State Pact against the Climate Emergency during his visit to the La Mierla fire (Guadalajara), the largest in the history of Castilla-La Mancha.
The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, visited on Wednesday the areas affected by the La Mierla forest fire in Guadalajara, which is still active and has already become the largest fire in the history of Castilla-La Mancha. From the Advanced Command Post in Tamajón, the head of the Executive once again called on political parties for a grand State Pact against the Climate Emergency.
Sánchez described it as “imperative” to reach an agreement that translates into “laws, measures and economic resources to safeguard the life, safety and prosperity of our territory.” “I ask you to set aside partisan struggles and focus on a common enemy, which is the climate emergency,” he declared.
The President emphasized that “the climate emergency kills and causes many regions and territories to lose prosperity.” In his speech, he detailed that the agreement should not be limited to fire extinguishing but must include prevention policies, awareness, and sustained economic resources throughout the year, as well as mitigation and adaptation measures to climate change.
The head of the Executive was accompanied by the President of Castilla-La Mancha, Emiliano García-Page, and the Government delegate in the region, José Pablo Sabrido. During the visit, he met with the heads of the emergency services working to extinguish the fire, to whom he expressed his gratitude for their “work, effort, dedication and commitment, and for risking their lives to protect the lives of others.”
Sánchez highlighted the cooperation between administrations, not only in extinguishing but also in recovering the affected areas. “All levels of the State are working hand in hand to fight against the fires,” he stated. The Government of Spain, he added, “will be there providing resources for extinguishing, as we are doing, but also providing economic resources for the recovery of the affected areas.”
The President also acknowledged the work of the Government of Castilla-La Mancha in responding to the climate emergency and in energy transformation, highlighting “flagship” green hydrogen projects for the community and for Spain as a whole.
The La Mierla fire, declared last weekend, has already devastated thousands of hectares and forced the evacuation of several population centres. Adverse weather conditions, with high temperatures and wind, have hindered extinguishing efforts, in which hundreds of personnel are working.
For citizens, the situation serves as a reminder of the urgency to adopt measures against climate change. The pact proposed by Sánchez would involve, if materialized, a multi-year commitment of resources and the approval of specific laws, which would affect sectors such as agriculture, forest management, and urban planning in risk areas.
The President has urged political groups to begin discussions immediately, without specifying deadlines. Next week, a reconstruction commission meeting is scheduled in Congress, where the proposal could be revisited.
