The Balearic Government attributes the month-on-month increase in unemployment in July, of 4.96%, to the registration of 587 regularised migrants, of whom 90.8% are unemployed and 86.7% have only completed primary education.
The Minister of Labour, Public Function and Social Dialogue, Catalina Cabrer, stated this Tuesday that the month-on-month rise in registered unemployment in the Balearics in July, of 4.96%, is largely due to the incorporation of individuals from the extraordinary regularisation process for migrants. Specifically, 587 individuals are registered with a code from this regularisation, of which 224 were already registered in June and 363 have joined in July.
Cabrer appeared at a press conference to assess the monthly employment data, which she described as "very good" despite the month-on-month increase. The archipelago closed July with 24,882 unemployed, 1.99% less than the same month last year, but 4.96% more than in June, when a seasonal decrease was expected.
“July is usually a low month, because the seasonal affiliations have already been made. We are surprised that there has not been a reduction, but rather a 5% increase, when it usually hovers around 3%,” the minister explained. “We have asked ourselves why this increase, and the answer is once again, as last month, in the individuals from the Government's extraordinary regularisation.”
The profile of this group raises concerns for the regional government due to their low employability. According to the data provided by Cabrer, 90.8% of these individuals are unemployed and 86.7% have only completed primary education. The minister warned that they “strain the work of the SOIB,” which must cater to a group with “difficulties in job insertion” and that needs “guidance and training.”
The Government insists that the tourist season is going well and that the overall data is positive compared to the previous year, but specific support is being requested for these new job seekers. Catalina Cabrer emphasised that the challenge now is to “ensure that these individuals find employment,” for which personalised insertion pathways will be promoted.
The minister announced that the SOIB will strengthen training and guidance programmes aimed at this group, and expressed hope that the affiliation will continue to evolve positively during the remainder of the high season. The next monthly data, expected in September, will serve to verify whether the trend consolidates or if the effect of regularisation continues to weigh on the figures.
