The Isla Cristina Town Council has received €24.3 million from the Government of Spain to carry out 28 actions against the effects of climate change, including the improvement of water networks and flood prevention.
The Isla Cristina Town Council received a cheque for €24,328,340.67 from the Government of Spain on Tuesday to finance a programme of 28 strategic actions aimed at protecting the municipality from flooding and storms. The Government's subdelegate in Huelva, María José Rico, handed over the funding to the mayor, Jenaro Orta, at an event where both highlighted the preventive nature of the investment.
The funds, framed within Royal Decree-Law 5/2026 from the Ministry of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, will allow for the repair and modernisation of infrastructures damaged by the series of storms and other recent extreme weather phenomena. Among the priorities are the improvement of water networks and channels, strengthening flood prevention, and actions to reduce the effects of climate change.
María José Rico congratulated the mayor and the Municipal Corporation for the technical work carried out, which she described as “rigorous, motivated, and well-founded.” The subdelegate emphasised that this funding will not only restore infrastructures but will also “open the door to future prevention works,” and recalled the complementary aid to the local primary sector: more than 108 vessels from Isla Cristina have already received €627,000, while 21 farmers and ranchers have obtained over €442,000, totalling more than one million euros in support for these sectors.
The mayor, Jenaro Orta, described the grant as “historic” and highlighted its preventive nature: “This grant has a preventive character for the future and allows us to tackle endemic problems that could not be solved without such a significant financial contribution, giving us the right to be optimistic about the future of Isla Cristina.” Orta announced that the Town Council is already working on launching the projects, especially in hydraulic infrastructures, to meet the established deadlines.
This funding adds to the €10.5 million recently obtained through the Integrated Action Plan “Isla Cristina 2029: An Island of Care,” co-financed with FEDER funds. In total, the municipality will mobilise nearly €35 million for strategic projects that will modernise infrastructures, strengthen public services, and improve the quality of life for residents.
The mayor thanked the support of the Government Subdelegation and the work of the municipal technical and economic services, as well as the consensus reached in the Corporation around projects that “are not just for one legislature, but for the future of Isla Cristina.” The coming weeks will be crucial for the tendering of the first works, with special attention to hydraulic actions.
