The Tamaulipas government will cancel around 4,000 public transport concessions that are not regularised by August, as announced by the Deputy Secretary of Transport, Armando Núñez Montelongo.
The Tamaulipas government has announced the cancellation of approximately 4,000 public transport concessions once the fiscal decree that allowed concessionaires to regularise their debts with significant discounts concludes in August. This was indicated by the Deputy Secretary of Transport, Armando Núñez Montelongo, who explained that unused permits or those whose holders do not take advantage of the programme will be withdrawn and reassigned.
The decree, promoted by Governor Américo Villarreal Anaya, has allowed debts that in some cases exceeded 120,000 pesos to be reduced to amounts close to 14,800 pesos. This measure has facilitated thousands of concessionaires to get up to date, but of the nearly 8,000 concessions with significant debts, approximately half will not return to operation due to the abandonment of units after the pandemic, low profitability, unpayable debts, or administrative sanctions.
Reassignment of Permits in High Demand Municipalities
As part of the reorganisation, the Subsecretariat of Transport is already considering the reassignment of permits in different regions. Among them, 800 concessions for school transport in Reynosa, 1,000 permits for personnel transport in that same municipality, and 440 concessions in El Mante, where this service currently operates irregularly. Núñez Montelongo explained that this strategy aims to provide greater legal certainty to concessionaires and avoid legal conflicts related to the succession of permits.
The official warned that those who do not regularise their situation before the decree concludes will retain their original debts and will permanently lose their concession. “We are doing well with revenue collection, but the message is clear: the decree will not be repeated,” he emphasised.
Impact on Concessionaires and Users
For concessionaires, the regularisation window expires in August, and those who do not comply will irreversibly lose their permits. For users, the reassignment of concessions in municipalities such as Reynosa and El Mante could improve the supply of school and personnel transport, which is currently insufficient or irregular. The state government expects the new scheme to provide legal security and avoid litigation over the inheritance of permits.
Concessionaires interested in regularising must go to the Subsecretariat of Transport before the decree ends. Those who do not will see their concessions cancelled and lose any rights over them.
