The blockade by the Antimundialist Assembly on Periférico Sur and Zapote complicates transit for thousands of fans heading to the Estadio Ciudad de México for the round of 16 match.

The protest by the Antimundialist Assembly has collapsed the lateral of Periférico Sur at the height of Zapote, near the Ollin Yoliztli Hall, since 1:00 PM on this 5th of July. The closure coincides with the countdown to the Mexico-England round of 16 match of the 2026 World Cup, which takes place tonight at the Estadio Ciudad de México.

Police fly over the area as hundreds of cars seek alternate routes

The Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC-CDMX) has deployed a special operation with helicopter overflights to monitor the demonstration and coordinate security measures. Meanwhile, motorists trying to reach the stadium are facing long delays.

Traffic congestion is compounded by the road closures already planned for the World Cup event. Authorities recommend that fans plan their journeys in advance and check the alternate routes available, such as Insurgentes Avenue or the Inner Circuit.

Rain adds to the chaos around the stadium

As if the traffic jam weren't enough, heavy rain is battering the southern part of the capital. The rain further complicates mobility for pedestrians and drivers trying to arrive on time at the venue. The combination of protest, police operation, and rain is creating a stressful afternoon for supporters of the Mexican national team.

The Antimundialist Assembly, a collective opposing the tournament, has not announced how long the blockade will last. For its part, the SSC-CDMX has urged calm and recommends staying updated through official traffic channels.

“We are doing everything possible to clear the roads, but the priority is to ensure the safety of all individuals,” said sources from the Secretariat of Citizen Security.

For the thousands of fans already on their way, the advice is clear: leave at least three hours early, avoid Periférico Sur, and bring a raincoat. The match is scheduled for 21:00, and the stadium will open its doors at 18:00. Those who arrive late will miss out, and not just because of the score.
