The Ibex 35 is trading with slight declines despite the positive tone in Europe. Indra and IAG lead the gains, while Iberdrola and Repsol discount dividends and weigh on the index.

The Ibex 35 has started the week with slight declines, in a session marked by the dividend discount of two of its heavyweights: Iberdrola and Repsol. Despite the positive atmosphere in European markets, the Spanish index struggles to take off due to the burden of these companies.

Indra and IAG rise due to the defence and tourism sectors

The shares of Indra are the biggest gainers of the session, driven by a rebound in the defence sector. The market is once again focusing on the war in Ukraine and the upcoming NATO summit, benefiting security-related stocks. Additionally, the Ministry of Defence is designing a plan for the transition to a new fighter jet in which Indra will play a significant role, according to industry sources.

Amadeus and IAG also stand out positively, benefiting from the good moment in tourism and travel demand. Both stocks are trading with significant advances, reflecting investor confidence in the sector's recovery.

Iberdrola and Repsol punished by dividend discount

At the bottom of the Ibex 35, Iberdrola suffers the greatest punishment. The company is discounting the dividend it will pay on July 27, with a yield of 1.9% based on Friday's closing price. This means that the real decline, discounting this effect, is just over 1%. However, being one of the stocks with the highest weighting in the index, its impact on the Ibex is notable.

Repsol is also discounting dividends in today's session, which partly explains its negative performance. Both stocks are among the worst performers of the day, although analysts believe that the movement is technical and does not reflect a fundamental deterioration of the companies.

How to invest in the Ibex 35: options for investors

For those interested in taking positions in the Ibex 35, there are various alternatives. ETFs, such as LYXIB.ES, allow for replicating the index with reduced fees. On platforms like XTB, the first €100,000 of monthly trading is exempt from buying and selling fees.

Another option is investment plans, which allow for combining several assets and scheduling periodic contributions from just €15. The investor can choose up to 9 different ETFs in each plan, thus diversifying their exposure to the Spanish market.

For the small investor, today's decline due to the dividend discount may present a buying opportunity, as the adjusted price reflects the future payment. However, it is important to remember that past performance does not guarantee future results and that any decision should be made with caution.
