Marco Antonio Baños, representative of Somos México, proposed at the INE to create an independent commission to audit the finances of all parties, in response to accusations about alleged illicit resources.
The party Somos México has issued a public challenge to Morena: to submit to a joint audit that reviews the source of the money received by all political formations. The proposal was made by Marco Antonio Baños during the session of the General Council of the National Electoral Institute (INE).
Baños suggested creating a commission made up of experts in auditing and lawyers to analyze the accounts of each party. “If you really have this vocation for transparency, as you have been stating, then let’s submit ourselves to public scrutiny,” he declared.
The representative of Somos México questioned the origin of the resources that, he said, Morena is using in early pre-campaigns, outside the legal deadlines. He called for an investigation into what is happening with the ruling party's funds in these early campaigns.
The proposal arises in a context of tensions between both political forces. Baños mentioned the case of the former governor of Baja California, Ernesto Ruffo Appel, whom he described as a “political prisoner” of Morena. “We do not want cases of political prisoners like that of Ruffo Appel to be repeated,” he asserted.
Baños also linked the accusations against Morena with investigations in the United States that would affect figures such as Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla, Rubén Rocha Moya, and Marina del Pilar Ávila, all of whom have been pointed out for allegedly receiving resources of illicit origin.
“We invite the parties. Do you really want to make transparent who is using improper money? Well, let’s form those commissions,” Baños insisted, highlighting his party's commitment to transparency both in receiving and applying resources.
During his speech, a collaborator of Baños displayed a poster with the phrase “#RuffoPresoPolítico,” referring to the situation of the former Baja Californian governor. Baños himself claimed that the Federal Government and Morena are trying to hide the accusations against their members.
The proposal from Somos México seeks for the commission of experts to be autonomous and to review the finances of all political forces, without exception. “Let’s review the finances of absolutely everyone,” Baños concluded, calling for Morena to undergo the “acid test.”
The opposition party is willing to have its accounts examined but demands that the ruling party do the same. The initiative now rests in the hands of the INE and the willingness of Morena to accept the challenge of transparency.
