The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has visited the Ford plant in Almussafes to announce the extension of the first territorial RED Mechanism until the end of 2026, at a cost of €45 million.
On Thursday, the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, announced the extension of the first territorial RED Mechanism at the Ford plant in Almussafes (Valencia) until the end of 2026. The measure, which has cost nearly €45 million, has allowed for the protection of jobs and the training of around 4,000 workers from the factory and its main suppliers.
Sánchez made the announcement during a visit to the Valencian facility, accompanied by the second vice president and Minister of Labour, Yolanda Díaz; the Minister of Industry, Jordi Hereu; the Minister of Science, Diana Morant; the president of the Generalitat, Carlos Mazón, and the Government delegate in the Valencian Community, Pilar Bernabé.
The head of the Executive emphasised that the alliance between Ford and the Chinese group Geely to manufacture more vehicles in Almussafes "represents the future" and demonstrates "Spain's capacity to attract large investments". In his speech, he recalled that less than two years ago, the dana severely hit the area, but today they gather to talk about "recovery, confidence, growth, and prosperity".
The RED Mechanism, activated for the first time with a territorial character, has been key in supporting the adaptation of the workforce to new production processes. "Thanks to this instrument, Ford and its main suppliers have been able to protect jobs and facilitate the training of around 4,000 workers," Sánchez explained.
The president defended the Government's commitment to sustainable mobility that generates more industry and higher-skilled jobs. To this end, the PERTE of the Electric and Connected Vehicle has been deployed, mobilising over €4.8 billion, and the Auto Plan 2030 has been developed in collaboration with the sector.
Sánchez pointed out that the goal is for the energy transition to be "an asset for reindustrialisation and the reinforcement of Spanish leadership in Europe". He also confirmed that the Government continues to work with the Valencian Community to find, throughout 2026, a battery assembly project that complements the plant's activity.
"This Almussafes plant represents the best example of an economic policy, of an industrial policy, that places public-private collaboration and industrial decarbonisation at the centre of the agenda," Sánchez stated.
The president concluded by valuing that the agreement with Geely "marks the beginning of a new stage, with more innovation, more technological capacity, more opportunities, more quality jobs, and also more sustainability".
For the workers of Almussafes, the extension of the RED Mechanism means an additional breath of fresh air in a context of transformation in the automotive sector. The training of 4,000 employees will facilitate adaptation to new production processes, while details are finalised for the manufacture of new vehicles and the possible assembly of batteries.
Sánchez's visit to the Valencian plant comes at a crucial moment for the automotive industry in Spain, which faces the challenge of electrification and global competition. The Executive is confident that public-private collaboration and investments in R&D will maintain the country's leadership in the sector.
