The Argentine Silvana Tenreyro will take over as chief economist of the IMF on August 10, replacing Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas. Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva highlighted her academic and policy background.

Silvana Tenreyro will become the next chief economist of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) starting on August 10. The managing director of the institution, Kristalina Georgieva, announced this Monday the appointment of the Tucuman economist, who will succeed the French Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas, who is returning to academic activity.

A career forged at Harvard and the London School of Economics

Tenreyro was born in Tucumán and graduated in Economics from the National University of Tucumán. She later completed a master's degree and a PhD at Harvard University, one of the most prestigious institutions in the world. Since 2004, she has been the James E. Meade Professor of Economics at the London School of Economics (LSE), where she has developed an extensive research career.

Her career includes being a member of the Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of England from 2017 to 2023, as well as collaborations with the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and the Bank of Mauritius. She also presided over the European Economic Association and is a member of the British Academy and the Econometric Society, among other institutions.

“I am pleased to welcome Silvana Tenreyro as the next chief economist of the IMF. She brings exceptional experience in academia and policy formulation that will further strengthen the IMF's analysis and policy advice,” said Kristalina Georgieva.

The key role of the IMF Research Department

As chief economist, Tenreyro will lead the Research Department, responsible for producing fundamental reports such as global growth projections, financial stability analyses, and economic policy recommendations. These reports are a reference for governments, central banks, and investors around the world.

The appointment comes at a time of high global economic uncertainty, with trade wars, geopolitical tensions, and inflation that has not yet fully dissipated. From the IMF, Tenreyro will play a central role in developing the diagnosis that guides member countries.

Georgieva also praised her leadership style: “Silvana stands out as an exceptional leader and communicator. She is admired for her thoughtful and collaborative leadership style, her openness to diverse perspectives, and her ability to generate consensus while fostering rigorous debate.”

What does this mean for Spain and investors?

For Spanish analysts and managers, Tenreyro's arrival signifies continuity in the technical line of the organization, but with a profile more linked to practical monetary policy, given her experience at the Bank of England. The reports from the Research Department are closely monitored by the Bank of Spain and the Ministry of Economy, as they influence growth forecasts and fiscal policy recommendations.

Investors will need to pay attention to the first projections published by Tenreyro's team, especially regarding the Eurozone and the Spanish economy, which remains one of the most dynamic in the region but is also vulnerable to external shocks.

Tenreyro will assume her position on August 10, and her first major challenge will be the presentation of the global economic outlook for autumn, scheduled for October.
