The Huelva Chamber of Commerce brought together authorities and merchants in the capital for a regional event that highlights local markets as economic, tourist, and gastronomic drivers.

The San Sebastián Market in Huelva became the epicentre of Andalusian local commerce this Thursday. The Chamber of Commerce of the capital organized a regional event that gathered institutional representatives, merchants, and industry professionals to promote local markets as engines of the local economy, gastronomy, and tourism.

This initiative is part of the I Cameral Plan of Andalusia 2026-2028, driven by the Andalusian Council of Chambers of Commerce and subsidised by the Employment, Business and Self-Employment Department of the Andalusian Government. It was supported by the Huelva City Council and the San Sebastián Market Retailers Association, which is part of the FOE.

A showcase for local commerce

During the inauguration, the president of the Huelva Chamber of Commerce, Daniel Toscano, highlighted that local markets represent one of the best examples of proximity commerce and local economy. "They offer personalised attention, trust between merchants and customers, and quality fresh products," he noted, while defending their future potential against other forms of shopping.

Toscano emphasised that Huelva was chosen as the city to host this regional action, valuing the quality of Huelva's gastronomy and the professionalism of its merchants. "It is a recognition of the work of an essential sector for the local economy," he added.

Showcooking and promotional video to attract new audiences

One of the central moments was the presentation of a promotional video dedicated to the most representative local markets in Andalusia, showcasing the quality of their products and their tourist appeal. The programme also included a showcooking session led by chef Daniel del Toro, who prepared recipes using products purchased from the stalls at the San Sebastián Market. The creations were tasted by attendees, highlighting the connection between traditional markets, quality cooking, and healthy eating.

The initiative was complemented by a social media campaign to reinforce the image of these spaces as modern and dynamic, both for residents and tourists. The aim is to attract new audiences and consolidate the markets as meeting points.

Institutional support and the future of local commerce

The mayor of Huelva, Pilar Miranda, expressed gratitude that the city had been chosen to host this action, considering it a recognition of the work of merchants. She highlighted that both the San Sebastián Market and the El Carmen Market are benchmarks of local commerce, generating employment and strengthening the economic fabric. "They preserve the gastronomic heritage of the city," she affirmed.

The general director of Commerce of the Andalusian Government, Cecilia Ortiz, pointed out that local markets are an essential element of Andalusian identity and a driver of economic and social dynamism. She advocated for continued support for their modernisation to establish them as innovative and accessible spaces. Meanwhile, the managing director of the Andalusian Council of Chambers, Mercedes León Lozano, appreciated the commitment of the chamber network to strengthening local commerce.

For the people of Huelva, this initiative represents an opportunity to revalue their traditional markets. The San Sebastián Market, with over a century of history, consolidates itself as a vibrant space where daily shopping becomes an experience. The next time they stroll through its aisles, they may notice that their favourite stall shines with more pride than ever.
