The local government of Vigo has requested additional documentation from the Provincial Council of Pontevedra to authorise the installation of a giant screen in Praza da Estrela to watch the Spain-France match. The deadline is 13:00 on Tuesday, July 14.
The Vice President of the Provincial Council of Pontevedra, Luisa Sánchez, denounced on Monday a possible veto from Mayor Abel Caballero regarding the giant screen. Hours later, the Councillor for Social Policy, Yolanda Aguiar, responded with an audio message and a technical report highlighting deficiencies in the application.
Insufficient documentation according to the Safety report
The report, signed by the head of Safety at the City Council, concludes that the submitted documentation "does not satisfy or allow verification of the required technical safety conditions." Among the outstanding points are the capacity calculation, deemed "incomplete", the civil liability insurance and its payment receipt, the technical report signed by a qualified technician, and the electrical installation.
Furthermore, the City Council indicates that the responsible declaration and technical documentation of the screen and its structure have not been provided, as well as the authorisation from the domain holder, the Port of Vigo. The Provincial Council assures that the Port gave its approval earlier this morning.
Deadline until 13:00 on Tuesday
The local government has set a deadline until 13:00 on Tuesday, July 14 to rectify the deficiencies. If this is not done, the request will be considered withdrawn, which also includes the application for the World Cup final on Sunday, July 19.
Councillor Yolanda Aguiar attacked the Provincial Council, accusing it of wanting to organise the event "without complying with the law". She stated that the documentation was submitted to the City Council on Saturday, July 11, and denied that there had been any prior fluid communication. She described the application as "a disaster, a nonsense and unthinkable in a public administration".
The Provincial Council expresses perplexity
The Provincial Council of Pontevedra responded by expressing its "perplexity" at the municipal version. In a statement, it noted that the City Council "anticipates that an event breaches the rules even before the processing is complete." It added that the request does not take into account documentation submitted previously.
The provincial institution lamented the "belligerent" attitude of the local government, which instead of collaborating to allow the people of Vigo to support the team at a historic event, attacks another administration. Provincial sources assured that they will continue to address all documentation requests.
For the fans in Vigo, this controversy brings uncertainty about whether they will be able to enjoy the match on a giant screen in the city centre. The final decision rests with the City Council, which demands strict compliance with safety regulations. The ball is now in the Provincial Council's court, which has until tomorrow noon to present the correct documentation.
