The Council of Ministers has approved a direct grant of 800,000 euros for the organisation of the South Summit, the major startup event held in Madrid last June.

The Council of Ministers has given the green light to a direct grant of 800,000 euros for the entity Spain Startup and Investors Services, organiser of the South Summit, the benchmark event for the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Spain. The aid, channelled through the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Function, aims to strengthen Spain's positioning as an innovation hub.

A decade boosting startups

Since its creation in 2012 under the name of Spain Startup, the South Summit has become an unmissable event for startups, investors and large corporations. The ministry led by Óscar López highlights that the event has managed to connect key players in the innovative ecosystem, both nationally and internationally, and that its impact goes beyond the days of celebration.

The grant approved this Tuesday is part of the Government's strategy to boost entrepreneurship and innovation as engines of economic and social transformation. According to the royal decree, the aim is to promote technological solutions and business models capable of addressing current challenges, paying special attention to reducing structural gaps, such as the gender gap in the field of entrepreneurship.

Economic impact and job creation

The latest available report on the socioeconomic impact of the South Summit estimates that the event generates an economic impact of 39 million euros in Spain. Furthermore, it is estimated to contribute to the creation of over 3,400 jobs, both direct and indirect. These figures support public investment in an event that, according to sources from the ministry, consolidates Spain's image as an innovative country.

But perhaps the most striking figure refers to the South Summit's ability to mobilise investment. The startups that have reached the final phase of the Startup Competition since its inception have attracted over 20.5 billion euros in investment. Of that amount, more than 11.6 billion corresponds to startups of Spanish origin, demonstrating the strength of the national entrepreneurial ecosystem.

International expansion and future projection

The South Summit has not only grown in Madrid but has also extended its presence to other countries, especially in Latin America, with a consolidated edition in Brazil. This international projection reinforces the strategic objective of positioning Spain as a relevant player in the global innovation ecosystem.

For entrepreneurs and startups seeking funding, the South Summit has become a key platform. The Government's grant ensures the continuity of an event that, according to the organisers, will continue to be a meeting point for talent and capital. The next edition is scheduled for June 2027 in Madrid, and it is expected that public aid will help maintain its quality and reach.
