Spanish point guard Sergio de Larrea, who is shining in the Summer League with the Dallas Mavericks, has publicly challenged footballer Mikel Merino to a one-on-one basketball match.

The young point guard Sergio de Larrea, one of the rising stars of Spanish basketball competing in the NBA Summer League with the Dallas Mavericks, has decided to spice up the pre-season. In an interview, the Valencia Basket academy player was asked which Spanish national football team player he would challenge to a one-on-one in basketball. His answer was straightforward: Mikel Merino.

A duel between two multi-talented athletes

“I would challenge Mikel Merino. We would see how it goes, I’ve noticed he has some skills too,” declared De Larrea. The Navarre-born footballer, a hero for the national team in matches against Portugal and Belgium, has demonstrated his ability with the orange ball on several occasions. During the World Cup training camp, Merino showcased his talent at the Golden State Warriors facilities, with shooting and post moves that caught attention.

But Merino is not the only footballer with skills on the court. Pedro Porro has also shown his talents, as captured in a video where he made a three-pointer, while Pedri and Eric García, great NBA fans, also have much to say on the court. However, the chosen one for the challenge has been Merino, which promises a very entertaining duel if it ever materialises.

The Summer League, a showcase for Spanish talent

De Larrea is one of seven Spaniards participating in the NBA Summer League, alongside Hugo González (Celtics), Aday Mara (Thunder), Sergio de Larrea, and twins Jorge and Guillermo Díaz Graham (Mavericks), Baba Miller (Clippers), and Eli Ndiaye (Hawks). All of them are closely following the performance of the Spanish national football team in the World Cup, and some like Miller, Mara, and De Larrea are experiencing it with special intensity, sharing their support on social media, such as Miller’s photo in the national team jersey or Mara and De Larrea watching the semi-final against France together.

De Larrea’s challenge to Merino is not just an anecdote: it reflects the connection between two generations of Spanish athletes who excel in different disciplines but share a common passion for basketball. For readers, these types of challenges between elite athletes always generate excitement, and who knows if one day we will see Merino and De Larrea facing off on an NBA court or in a summer pavilion.

For now, the duel remains up in the air, but the invitation has been made. Mikel Merino, will you accept the challenge? Certainly, the one-on-one promises to be a spectacle.
