Medlog Holding Italia, the logistics subsidiary of MSC, has entered the shareholding of Interporto Bologna. The operation includes a capital increase of 8 million euros.
The Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has taken another step in its logistical expansion by entering the capital of Interporto Bologna, one of the most relevant intermodal platforms in Italy. The operation has been formalised through its subsidiary Medlog Holding Italia, which has joined as a new shareholder of the Italian company.
The decision was made by the general shareholders' meeting of Interporto Bologna, which also approved a capital increase of up to 8 million euros. This move strengthens the relationship between both companies, as Medlog was until now one of the main clients of the Interporto railway terminal for maritime intermodal transport.
Stefano Caliandro, president of Interporto Bologna, has stated that having an industrial operator of MSC's standing "significantly boosts the industrial development" of the company. In a statement, Caliandro highlighted Medlog's "proven experience, knowledge and solidity" in the key sectors of Interporto.
The capital increase is part of the strategy driven by the new board of directors of Interporto Bologna, elected less than a year ago. According to Caliandro, this injection of funds will support development projects and consolidate the platform's role as a logistics and railway hub at both national and international levels.
The operation has been made possible thanks to contributions from historical shareholders such as the Città Metropolitana di Bologna, the Bologna Chamber of Commerce, and Mercitalia Rail, in addition to Medlog's entry. Caliandro has described the new corporate structure, which combines public and private capital, as "a particularly significant strategic step" for the company's growth.
Although the economic details of Medlog's entry into the shareholding have not been disclosed, the operation strengthens MSC's presence in the logistics platform business in Italy. The Geneva-based shipping company is one of the largest maritime transport companies in the world and has been expanding its network of land services in recent years.
For Interporto Bologna, the arrival of an industrial partner like MSC represents financial and operational support. The platform, located in a strategic position in northern Italy, manages intermodal traffic connecting the port of Genoa with central and northern Europe.
The capital increase of 8 million euros will allow Interporto Bologna to undertake new investments in infrastructure and improve its service capacity. The Italian company expects these funds to be allocated to projects that enhance its competitiveness in the European logistics market.
The operation takes place in a context of growing interest from major shipping companies to control links in the land logistics chain. MSC already has port terminals and rail services in several countries, and its entry into Interporto Bologna strengthens its presence in the Mediterranean-Central Europe corridor.
