Supermercados El Jamón, based in Lepe (Huelva), has acquired the Granada chain Supermercados Dani, incorporating 19 stores and 570 employees. The operation allows it to complete its presence in all eight Andalusian provinces.
The Huelva-based company Supermercados El Jamón, founded in Lepe, has taken a giant step in its territorial expansion by formalising the purchase of the Granada chain Supermercados Dani. The operation, which was closed in recent weeks, involves the incorporation of 19 establishments (14 in Granada, one in Almería, two in Jaén, and two in Málaga) and a workforce of 570 professionals. With this, El Jamón reaches nearly 300,000 square metres of sales area and 14,000 square metres of wholesale channel.
A strategic leap for the Lepe company
The acquisition allows Supermercados El Jamón to complete its establishment in all eight Andalusian provinces, as it previously had no presence in Almería. The store in Adra (Almería) was the missing link in the company’s map. The operation also strengthens its position in Granada, where it already operated, and gives it access to new locations in Jaén and Málaga.
According to the company, the integration process will begin next October, when the Dani supermarkets will start to gradually change their signage to operate under the Supermercados El Jamón brand. The transition is expected to be gradual to minimise the impact on customers and employees.
Two Andalusian family businesses join forces
The operation brings together two family businesses with a very similar trajectory, based on customer proximity, local roots, and support for local suppliers. The CEO of Supermercados El Jamón, Mabel Díaz, has highlighted that “this operation represents an excellent opportunity to continue consolidating our position in the province of Granada and to keep growing in Andalusia. We remain true to our growth strategy through the incorporation of family-owned Andalusian companies, with which we share values and a similar understanding of business.”
For his part, the owner of Supermercados Dani, Daniel Lozano, has stated that “we are particularly excited that the project of a family-owned Andalusian company continues alongside another family-owned Andalusian company. We believe that this continuity is good news for the workers, for the suppliers, for the customers, and for the entire business fabric of our community.”
Both companies are part of the purchasing central IFA, which facilitated understanding. Díaz added that “our business stories have run parallel, and we have shared numerous moments. This agreement has been possible thanks to a cordial, fluid negotiation based on the good rapport and friendship that has always united us.”
El Jamón, the third largest distribution company in Andalusia
With this purchase, Supermercados El Jamón positions itself as the third largest distribution company in Andalusia by commercial surface area, only behind the large national chains. The company, which was founded in Lepe in 1993, now has over 300 establishments throughout Andalusia and continues its growth without losing its essence as a family business.
For the residents of the province of Huelva, the news has a special flavour: seeing how a local company becomes a regional benchmark. Furthermore, the operation does not affect the supermarkets in the area, which continue to operate normally. What changes is that, starting in October, customers in Granada, Almería, Jaén, and Málaga will be able to enjoy the same proximity philosophy that characterises El Jamón.
The integration of the new stores will be carried out while retaining the 570 employees of Supermercados Dani, ensuring job stability. The Huelva-based company has committed to preserving the Andalusian character of the acquired chain and to continue working with local suppliers. The first changes in branding will be seen in October, and it is expected that the complete transformation will be ready before the end of the year.
