The Huelva Chamber of Commerce has awarded Agrícola El Bosque (La Canastita) the Sustainable SME Accésit and Berryneo (Berryum) the Innovation and Digitalisation SME Accésit at the tenth edition of the SME of the Year Awards.

The Huelva-based company Agrícola El Bosque, known for its brand La Canastita, and the genetic improvement firm Berryneo, operating under the brand Berryum, have been the main protagonists of the tenth edition of the Huelva 2026 SME of the Year Awards, organised by the Huelva Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with Banco Santander and the Spanish Chamber of Commerce.

The award ceremony, held on 7 July at the Huelva Chamber of Commerce, recognised the commitment of both firms to two key pillars for the future of the agri-food sector: sustainability and innovation.

A prize for responsible production

Diego Velo, founder of Agrícola El Bosque, received the Sustainable SME Accésit, an award that highlights the company’s responsible production model. From its El Bosque farm, the company has developed initiatives for biodiversity protection, environmental restoration, and efficient resource management, integrating sustainability as a strategic axis.

This recognition is not the first the firm has received in this area. In 2025, it was awarded the Andalusia Environmental Award in the category of Conservation, Natural Environment, and Sustainable Development, consolidating its trajectory in this field.

Genetic innovation for the Huelva countryside

Meanwhile, Mariana Ochoa, Director of Genetics and Nursery at Berryneo, received the Innovation and Digitalisation SME Accésit. The company, specialised in research and genetic improvement of berries, works through its Berryum programme to obtain new varieties adapted to the needs of producers and international markets.

Berryneo was founded in 2015 as a project derived from the experience of Agrícola El Bosque, transforming decades of knowledge in berry production into an initiative focused on genetic improvement. Both companies share origins and strategic vision, and they operate from the same El Bosque farm, where production and innovation coexist to add value to the sector.

A century and a quarter of berry history

These recognitions come in a particularly significant year for La Canastita, which celebrates 125 years of history. The brand has evolved generation after generation to become a benchmark in berry production, combining tradition and modernity.

With these awards, the Huelva Chamber of Commerce recognises not only the excellence of two Huelva-based business projects but also a way of understanding agriculture in which sustainability and innovation are essential elements to face future challenges. For the reader in the province, these awards represent a boost for a key sector in the local economy, generating employment and retaining population in the area.

The next event for both companies will be the national gala of the SME of the Year Awards, where they will compete with winners from other Spanish provinces. A new showcase for Huelva's agri-food talent.
