Gandia closed June with 99 fewer unemployed and the lowest unemployment rate in 18 years. The mayor, José Manuel Prieto, highlights that the city has surpassed 25,000 affiliations to Social Security for the first time in years.
In June, Gandia reached the lowest unemployment figure in the last 18 years, with 99 fewer unemployed compared to the previous month. The data, presented this Monday by Mayor José Manuel Prieto and the Councillor for Finance, Salvador Gregori, confirms a trend that, according to the City Council, breaks with the traditional seasonality of the local labour market.
During the first six months of 2026, four of them have recorded a reduction in unemployment. “Beyond the result of a specific month, what matters is the trend, and that trend is clearly positive,” Prieto stated at a press conference.
“Today we are a city with more inhabitants, more economic activity, and, despite this, with fewer people unemployed,” the mayor affirmed.
Since June 2023, unemployment has decreased by 943 people, a reduction of 17.2%. This progress places Gandia as the second municipality with more than 45,000 inhabitants in the Valencian Community where unemployment has decreased the most, surpassing the average of large Valencian cities by four points.
The more stable behaviour of employment “evidences a more diversified, resilient economy capable of generating opportunities throughout the year,” Prieto emphasised. Traditionally, Gandia's labour market relied heavily on the tourist season, but since 2023, a more stable dynamic has been observed.
Record number of affiliations to Social Security
The mayor valued the affiliation data, which he considers “the best indicator that real employment is being created.” June closed with 1,142 more affiliations than in the same month last year, an increase of nearly 5%. This is the best affiliation figure for a June in the last 18 years.
Since the beginning of the legislature, Gandia has added 2,985 more affiliations to Social Security, an increase of 13.3%. For the first time in many years, the city has surpassed the barrier of 25,000 affiliated individuals, with forecasts of approaching 26,000 during July.
Unemployment among people aged 25 to 44, considered the core of the labour market, has decreased by 20.9% since the beginning of the legislature and by more than 60% compared to 2015.
Prieto attributed these results to the joint effort of workers, companies, and administrations, and expressed hope that the trend will consolidate in the coming months.
