Over 9,000 passengers chose the Buenavista Express ferry between Huelva and the Canary Islands in June and July, an 11% increase from 2025, thanks to the ship's renovation featuring a pool and sun deck.
The Buenavista Express, the ferry connecting the Port of Huelva with Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, has transported over 9,000 passengers during June and July, representing an 11% increase compared to the same period in 2025. This increase, amounting to nearly 600 more travellers, marks a record start to the summer season for Fred. Olsen Express, the shipping company operating the route.
The growth coincides with the comprehensive renovation of the ship, which now offers an experience akin to that of a mini-cruise. At 172 metres long and capable of sailing at 21.5 knots, the vessel has modernised its common areas, dining facilities, and relaxation zones. Among the new amenities are a pool, sun deck, arcade room, sports bar, calisthenics area, and a coworking space with high-speed wifi.
Juan Ignacio Liaño, the fleet director of Fred. Olsen Express, stated that “this offering, combined with the advantages of maritime transport such as travelling with your own vehicle, no baggage restrictions, and greater comfort for families, pets, and those transporting larger volumes of belongings, has contributed to this year's record number of users on the route.”
The crossing, which lasts approximately 33 hours, offers various accommodation options: ergonomic seats, premium bunks, quadruple exterior cabins, premium doubles, adapted cabins, and pet-friendly rooms, as well as Pet Rooms with ventilation and televisions. The dining options focus on local and zero-kilometre products, reflecting the company's commitment to the Canary Islands' primary sector.
For passengers from Huelva, the maritime connection provides an alternative to travel to the Canary Islands with their own car and without luggage limits, something particularly valued by families and those travelling with pets. Additionally, the shipping company offers a free assistance service and wheelchairs to facilitate boarding and disembarking.
Fred. Olsen Express is working alongside port authorities to enhance the experience at the Port of Huelva, where more comfortable waiting areas have been established for passengers, especially during the summer months. “Our goal is for the experience to begin upon arrival at the port,” Liaño emphasised.
The company, with over 50 years of experience, is a leader in the inter-island Canary market and makes an average of 22,500 trips a year, transporting over 4 million people. The route to Huelva is the only one connecting the Canary Islands with the mainland, and since its launch, it has gained popularity among travellers seeking a more flexible option than flying.
In the coming months, demand is expected to remain high, especially during the August holidays, and the shipping company plans to enhance onboard services with activities for all ages, such as dance workshops, aquagym, and water games.
