Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat airport has reached its largest historical offer of direct flights to Asia, as reported this Thursday by the Barcelona Air Route Development Committee (CDRA). The current network includes connections to Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Seoul, consolidating the airport among the European ones with the broadest offer to that continent.
The CDRA, made up of the Generalitat, the City Council of Barcelona, the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce, and Aena, works alongside airlines to maintain and expand these routes, one of the priorities of its Strategic Plan 2026-2030. Connectivity with Asia is considered key for the international positioning of the city.
In the case of South Korea, connections to Seoul will gradually be operated under the Korean Air brand, once the integration of Asiana Airlines into the Korean company is completed. Korean Air has informed the CDRA of its intention to increase weekly frequencies on the route in the near future, given the high demand between both markets.
The CDRA's Strategic Plan identifies Asia as one of the markets with the most potential to expand Barcelona's international connectivity. The economic growth of the region, the increase in trade flows, and the rise in business and tourism travel make this continent a priority for attracting new routes.
The consolidation of these connections strengthens Catalonia's international competitiveness, facilitates the internationalization of companies, and boosts the arrival of high-value visitors. They also play a crucial role in air freight transport, especially in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, technology, fashion, or fresh products.
CDRA studies estimate that there is still a potential demand of over 1.8 million annual passengers between Barcelona and various Asian markets that currently do not have direct connections. This figure is complemented by the growth potential of existing routes due to the stimulating effect generated by direct flights.
The current network of direct flights highlights the strength of the Barcelona-Asia market and supports the work that the CDRA will continue to develop to consolidate current routes and incorporate new connections in the coming years.
