The Aral Sea, which was the fourth largest inland lake in the world, has ceased to be a water reservoir and has become a massive gas emitter. According to a recent study, the exposed sediments of the former seabed release an amount of greenhouse gases annually comparable to the entire German industry. This finding underscores how the desiccation of an aquatic ecosystem can have unforeseen climatic consequences.
