Kenia Lechuga successfully defended her title in the women's double sculls (W1X) at the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games Santo Domingo 2026 on Tuesday, crossing the finish line in 7:54.49 minutes at the Presa el Rincón. The world runner-up surpassed Cuban Loraidis Echavarria (8:10.61) and Venezuelan Kimberlin Meneses (8:12.79).
The athlete from Monterrey, who had already won gold in San Salvador 2023, stated that her main rival was herself. “The competition was against myself, against the heat, against my mind, and I think I won,” she declared after the event. Lechuga, who has accumulated victories in the World Cups in Seville and Lucerne this year, thus begins her fourth Olympic cycle with her sights set on Los Angeles 2028.
The Mexican rowing team added more medals on the day. Maite Arrillaga and María García won the silver medal in the women's coxless pair (W2-) with a time of 7:40.68 minutes. In the men's category, Hugo Reyes and Jordy Gutiérrez took home the bronze in the coxless double (M2x) after recording 6:47.01 minutes.
The other gold of the day for Mexico came from Alexis López in the men's single (M1x), while the silver went to the Dominican Republic and the bronze to Cuba.
With these results, Mexico solidifies its status as a powerhouse in regional rowing.
