The AEAT has collected €685.34 million in Lleida between January and May 2026, an 8.2% increase compared to the previous year, which means about €10 million extra per month.

The State Agency for Tax Administration (AEAT) has collected €685.34 million in the province of Lleida between January and May 2026, representing an increase of €52 million compared to the same period in 2025. In monthly terms, the tax authority has collected about €10 million more each month. The increase of 8.2% is below the Catalan average (11.5%) and the national average (10.6%), according to data published by the AEAT.

These increases occur despite the fiscal measures approved by the central Government to mitigate the economic impact of the offensive against Iran, which began on February 28. Some of these aids, such as reductions in electricity and fuel bills, are already being gradually withdrawn.

IRPF: the engine of revenue in Lleida

The main support for tax revenues in Lleida is the Personal Income Tax (IRPF), which has contributed €317 million net between January and May. This represents a 10.9% increase compared to the same period in 2025, a rise much higher than that of employment. In June, the province reached a record number of Social Security affiliates with 225,930 contributors, 6,276 more than in May (a 2.86% increase) and 7,503 more than in June 2025 (a 3.43% increase).

The strong increase in IRPF is explained not only by wage improvements but also because the tax authority has not adjusted the tax rate for inflation. This raises the tax burden on taxpayers. In fact, the growth of IRPF in Lleida exceeds the Catalan average (7.9%) and the national average (9.5%).

The increase in IRPF in Lleida doubles the growth of employment, highlighting a real increase in the tax burden for workers.

VAT and Corporate Tax: stable consumption, flat businesses

The Value Added Tax (VAT), linked to consumption, has generated €291 million in Lleida in the first five months, a 7.6% increase compared to 2025. This rise reflects sustained family consumption, although moderate compared to IRPF. Meanwhile, the Corporate Tax has generated €63.44 million, a figure almost identical to the €63.66 million from the previous year, indicating that business accounts have not shown significant improvement.

The rest of the state taxes —such as those on non-residents and special taxes on alcoholic beverages— have a very small weight in Lleida, with just over three million each. Overall, total revenue reflects a provincial economy growing below the average, but with rising tax pressure particularly affecting workers.

For the taxpayer in Lleida, this translates to the fact that, although there is more employment and slightly better wages, the tax authority takes a larger share of income. The absence of deflation of the IRPF means that many salaried workers pay more taxes without an increase in their real purchasing power. The question is whether the central Government will adjust the tax rate in future budgets or if the tax pressure will continue to rise.
